• Medicinally, licorice is an excellent aid to digestion and is an anti inflammatory, allowing it to prevent the growth of particular bacteria, including drug resistant strains.
In some Japanese studies, licorice has been shown to reduce hot flashes in menopause and stimulate normal ovulation. Most importantly l, licorice acts as an expectorant, ridding of mucus in the respiratory tract, soothing sore throats, and works as an aid for upper respiratory tract. This is also preventative.
•However, species in the glycyrrhiza family have an extreme amount of natural sugar (50 times more than cane sugar) so use caution if you are diabetic or have high blood pressure or potassium deficiencies.
•The root is primarily used for medicinally purposes. The stick can be chewed directly or it can be ground into a fine powder for tea preparation. Additionally the fresh or dried leaf components as well as flowers can be used in tincture preparation
• Can be grown in fertile well drained soil, partial shade. Allow a few years of growth before harvesting roots in the fall after the tops have dried•
